Michael Leon Chrzan is a Data Scientist at the University of Maryland's Center for Education Data Science and Innovation, where he leads research at the intersection of education, data science, and artificial intelligence. With over a decade of experience spanning classroom instruction, policy analysis, and applied research, Michael brings a unique practitioner-scholar lens to his work.

Michael holds degrees in Education Data Science from Stanford University where he specialized in machine learning, measurement, natural language processing, and causal inference and in Mathematics and Education from the University of Michigan where he studied secondary education and earned teaching credentials in 6-12 Mathematics and Psychology. His research focuses on developing equitable, data-informed tools to support teachers, schools, districts, and EdTech partners, with recent projects modeling mass school closure risk for districts and exploring the use of generative AI in educational settings.

Prior to his graduate studies, Michael served as a Master Teacher and instructional leader in Detroit Public Schools Community District, leading the math department of his school, mentoring early-career educators and designing vertically aligned Project-Based Learning math curricula. He has also done data science and research work with organizations including Bellwether Education Partners, Newsela, and San Francisco Unified School District.
